Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and DG ENV discussed the details of Ukraine's accession to the LIFE program

During an online meeting, the European Commission's Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV) presented to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources the principles of work and opportunities of the LIFE program.

Consultations between Ukraine and the EU on Ukraine's accession to LIFE have now begun.

What is LIFE?

LIFE Program is the EU's financial instrument for protecting the environment and implementing climate action.

It helps countries move to a clean, circular, energy-efficient, climate-neutral and climate-resilient economy to protect and improve the environment.

Funds for projects are provided on a co-financing basis, on a competitive basis.

Since 1992, the LIFE program has co-financed more than 5,000 projects. For

the period 2021-2027, the total budget of LIFE is EUR 5.4 billion.

Areas of funding:

Environment:

Nature and biodiversity - implementation of the EU Habitats and Birds Directives, support for the Natura 2000 network;

Circular economy and quality of life - implementation of measures to improve air quality, waste/water management.

Climate:

Climate change mitigation and adaptation - implementation of EU climate laws;

Energy transition - increasing the share of RES, increasing energy efficiency.

Why is this important for Ukraine?

For Ukraine, the implementation of projects of businesses, government and non-governmental organizations under the LIFE program will be an effective tool for financing innovative projects in the field of environmental protection and reconstruction in the postwar period.
