The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal discussed the organization of humanitarian corridors, support for displaced persons and reconstruction of infrastructure with the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres.
The meeting, which took place in Kyiv on April 28, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister - Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk and Minister of Social Policy Maryna Lazebna.
Denys Shmyhal stressed that Ukraine does not abandon attempts to end the
war through diplomacy, but the enemy is resorting to extreme forms of terrorism against civilians."Feeling incapable of ruining the national unity of Ukraine, the enemy resorted to acts of genocide in the temporarily occupied territories. Ukraine will continue to insist that the International Criminal Court make appropriate decisions on crimes committed by the russian army in Ukraine," the Prime Minister urged.
The Prime Minister noted that Ukraine’s economic losses due to the war are growing every day, and it is vital for us to start rebuilding the infrastructure in the liberated territories as soon as possible. Denys Shmyhal called on the UN to join this process, in particular, to provide technical support in demining the territories.
During the conversation, the Prime Minister thanked the UN for its support of Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons. He noted that Ukraine had launched programs to render assistance to the people and continues to work on the new ones.
Denys Shmyhal stressed that the UN must take the lead in ending the war and mitigating its consequences. He called on the organization to become more involved in unblocking the opening of humanitarian corridors for the safe evacuation of civilians from the temporarily occupied territories.
"The situation in Mariupol requires immediate intervention," the Prime Minister accentuated.
Denys Shmyhal stressed that he was convinced that the UN should take all possible measures to urge russia to comply with its agreements to provide humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of people to Ukrainian-controlled territories to prevent the deportation of Ukrainians to russia.
António Guterres noted that the UN would continue to support Ukrainians and planned to triple aid resources. According to him, the organization is doing what it takes to evacuate people, in particular from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol.
The Head of Government thanked the UN for the initiative to organize corridors for the evacuation of people, namely from Mariupol.
