UNESCO supports Ukraine, says Serhii Shkarlet

On March 13, 2022, Minister of Education and Science Serhii Shkarlet held an online meeting with UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini.

The Minister addressed Ms Stefania with a request to support Ukrainian pupils, students, teachers and lecturers in accessing the educational and scientific process at an extremely difficult time for Ukraine.

Ms Stefania Giannini expressed her absolute support for the people of Ukraine and

noted that the UNESCO team is ready to provide expert assistance to expand and strengthen Ukraine's distance education system.

At the same time, the Assistant Director-General noted that UNESCO will analyze the possibilities for Ukrainian citizens temporarily evacuated to the European Union, especially those seeking higher education. Ms Stefania Giannini said that universities in some countries are actively supporting students and academics, and are ready to help them in their learning and activities.

Serhii Shkarlet also asked Ms Stefania Giannini to pay special attention to the analysis of the situation resulting from the ruthless destruction of cultural monuments, including educational institutions, as the aggressive actions of the occupiers will lead to the genocide of humanity and history.

In addition, in connection with the unprecedented manifestation of russian aggression, the Minister appealed to the UNESCO Assistant Director-General to support the impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

"There are 5 powerful nuclear power plants on the territory of Ukraine," peaceful atoms "in case of damage will cause a catastrophe not only for Ukraine but also for the whole world. That is why the issue of closing the sky is of utmost importance for us, "said Serhii Shkarlet.

It will be recalled that the Ministry of Education and Science involves Israeli experts in conducting trainings on the organization of the educational process during hostilities.
