The President signed a decree on the declaration of a state of emergency

On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda signed a decree on the declaration of a state of emergency.

The state of emergency is introduced in the country due to the actions of the Russian Federation that threaten the overriding national security interests of the Republic of Lithuania, inter alia, related to the reliable control and protection of the state border, which also forms part of the external border of the European Union.

The purpose of the introduction of the state of emergency is to eliminate the threat to public

peace by ensuring the activities of the authorities and services responsible for public security and public order in a prompt response to possible unrest and possible provocations related to large-scale military forces mobilized on the territories of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.

By this decree, the President convenes an extraordinary session of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, which must begin no later than 24 hours after the promulgation of this decree, and submits the decision on the introduction of the state of emergency, as promulgated by this decree, to the Seimas for approval during the extraordinary session of the Seimas.

The decree introduces the state of emergency throughout the territory of the Republic of Lithuania for the period from 13:00 February 24, 2022, to 24:00 March 10, 2022.
