The President: Lithuania is ready to provide all possible assistance to Ukraine

On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda, in response to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, convened a meeting of the State Defense Council which adopted decisions to declare a state of emergency in Lithuania and request NATO to invoke Article 4 of the Treaty.

Implementing the decision of the State Defense Council, Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Deividas Matulionis, together with the Baltic and other countries of NATO’s eastern flank, formally addressed the North Atlantic Council, which began consultations. On Thursday, NATO also activated its defense plans for its eastern flank.

The State Defense Council also adopted a decision on the introduction of a state of

emergency in Lithuania. The President signed a decree introducing a state of emergency from 13:00 on Thursday until 24:00 March 10. The decree has to be approved by the Seimas at an extraordinary session to be held today.

The document notes that a state of emergency is introduced taking into account the large-scale military actions carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

The State Defense Council also discussed assistance to Ukraine.

“Lithuania is ready to provide all possible assistance to the fraternal nation of Ukraine in every possible way – both as a separate state and together with its allies and partners – and to participate in the decisions on the prevention of the aggressor’s actions.

None of us is going to put up with what is happening in the middle of the day in the middle of Europe. In a country which, in every sense – in its history, its traditional values and its loyalty to European principles – deserves to be a full member of the family of European countries. It deserves this right. And no one else – neither from the West, nor from the South, nor from the East, nor from the North – can decide their fate for them, only they can do it themselves,” President Gitanas Nausėda said after the State Defense Council meeting.
