The President at the European Council: Russia must immediately cease military aggression in Ukraine

On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda participated in a special meeting of the European Council in Brussels, which was convened in response to Russia’s large-scale military attack in Ukraine. EU leaders strongly condemned Russia’s actions, demanding that Russia immediately cease its military aggression and unconditionally withdraw military forces from the entire territory of Ukraine.

The EU agreed on measures that would have severe economic consequences on Russia as

a result of its aggression in Ukraine, the President noted.

“EU leaders expressed their unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have the right to decide their own destiny themselves and we must give Ukraine a clear European perspective and support it on its path to European integration,” Gitanas Nausėda said.

The President emphasized that macro-financial assistance to Ukraine from the European Union and the whole international community was vital.

European leaders agreed on the extension of individual and sectoral economic, diplomatic, financial, and energy sector sanctions against Russia. They also condemned the involvement of the Belarusian regime in Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine and decided to draw up additional sanctions against Belarus.
