The Ukrainian side is doing everything possible to restore the power supply to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as soon as possible. This was announced by Minister of Energy German Galushchenko.
The Minister explained that in general the power supply at the Chernobyl NPP is provided by several power transmission lines. Last night, as a result of the occupiers' shelling, the last 750 kV transmission line, which supplied electricity to the nuclear power plant, was cut off. Currently, there are reserve capacities - diesel generators.
"Ukraine is doing everything possible to shortly restore electricity supply. Electricity
supply is needed, in particular, to cool the spent nuclear fuel stored there," German Galushchenko said. The Minister said that the Ukrainian side had sent a request to the occupiers to provide a corridor for maintenance crew to carry out relevant work.
German Galushchenko thanked all power engineers who continue to perform their duties in the conditions of hostilities.
The Minister expressed special gratitude and support to the staff of the Chernobyl NPP and Zaporizhia NPP, who have been at work for many days under occupation. He stressed that the work of power engineers in conditions of constant physical and psychological pressure from the occupiers - a real heroism.
"Nuclear terrorism is not just about shooting at a nuclear power plant. This is when you also put pressure on staff, whose mistake can cost a lot," the Minister said.
German Galushchenko once again appealed to the international community to respond to the situation.
"This is important for the security of not only Ukraine or Europe, but the whole world. The military must leave nuclear facilities. And we suggest that the relevant OSCE and IAEA missions be placed at the stations to ensure the security of those facilities. But the key is to close the sky over Ukraine," the Minister underscored.
