The meeting in Versailles marked the beginning of Ukraine's official accession to the EU. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna on one of the TV channels, commenting on the results of the meeting of EU heads of state and government in Versailles (France), which took place on March 10-11. As a result, a statement was adopted in which the European Council called on the European Commission to provide its opinion on Ukraine's application for membership in the European Union without delay.

"Work has already begun with the European Commission to prepare a decision on granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union, which will give us access to the relevant EU funds. For our part, we in the Government also need to do some work to prepare the necessary materials," said Olha Stefanishyna.

The official also noted that the talks in Versailles lasted rather long and each EU

country defended its position, which was reflected in the text of the final document. At the same time, the statement takes into account the position advocated by Ukraine on the urgency of starting the procedure of consideration of the Ukrainian application by the European Commission.

"Of course, we would like to see in this statement clearer wording that Ukraine will become a member of the EU," said Olha Stefanishyna. She noted that the discussions within the EU are influenced by the factor of the Western Balkans, with which accession talks have already begun.

On February 28, 2022, the President of Ukraine submitted an application from Ukraine to join the European Union.

At the same time, a statement approved during a meeting of EU leaders in Versailles on March 10-11 reads that the European Council acknowledged the European aspirations and the European choice of Ukraine, as stated in the Association Agreement. It is noted that the European Commission must provide its opinion on Ukraine's application.

"Pending this and without delay, we will further strengthen our bonds and deepen our partnership to support Ukraine in pursuing its European path. Ukraine belongs to our European family," the document reads.
