On October 24th, the campaign joins the celebration, as Bologna prepares to welcome visitors and creators for a special anniversary edition
ROME, ITALY, October 19, 2026 / EINPresswire.com / -- On October 24, The EU Fab 6 – Savor the PDO and PGI Wines and Deli Meats from Europe celebrates Mortadella Day, the annual event dedicated to Mortadella
Bologna PGI and the history and identity of one of Europe's most recognizable protected cured meats. This year's celebration takes on a special significance. Mortadella Bologna PGI celebrates 365 years since October 24, 1661, when Cardinal Farnese issued a proclamation in Bologna establishing some of the first rules for its production. The anniversary also coincides with another important milestone: the 25th anniversary of the Consorzio Italiano Tutela Mortadella Bologna, which has been working since 2001 to protect, promote, and enhance the product and its production know-how.
For The EU Fab 6, Mortadella Day represents an opportunity to highlight the role of the PGI quality system, which ties Mortadella Bologna PGI to a defined production tradition and guarantees compliance with specific standards. The product is now known well beyond its region of origin, while maintaining a strong connection to Bologna and its gastronomic heritage.
Those wishing to celebrate Mortadella Day in person can attend the event at Palazzo Re Enzo, in the heart of Bologna, with free admission. The program includes a cooking show with Bolognese chef Max Poggi and Daniele Reponi, historical reenactments dedicated to the history of Mortadella Bologna PGI, tastings, and an exhibition dedicated to the 365th anniversary of the 1661 proclamation. The event will also host creators involved in The EU Fab 6 campaign, who will take part in a special treasure hunt through the streets of Bologna to discover the city and the history of its "Pink Queen."
"Mortadella Day is an opportunity to celebrate a product that has been part of our gastronomic heritage for centuries, but also to demonstrate how Mortadella Bologna PGI remains contemporary and internationally appreciated," says Gianluigi Ligasacchi, Director of the Italian Consortium for the Protection of Mortadella Bologna. "This year has a particularly special meaning, as we celebrate both the 365th anniversary of the historic proclamation of 1661 and the 25th anniversary of the Consortium. It's a moment to look back on an extraordinary history, but also to continue introducing Mortadella Bologna PGI to new generations of consumers."
The EU Fab 6 continues to bring European PDO and PGI products closer to consumers, the media, and operators in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, combining information on origin and certification with contemporary ways to discover and appreciate Europe's gastronomic heritage.
Co-financed by the European Union, the campaign "The EU Fab 6 – Savor the PDO and PGI Wines and Deli Meats from Europe" promotes European excellence in the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Through tastings, educational activities, and promotional events, it supports the visibility and value of PDO and PGI certified products.
The initiative is supported by six prestigious consortia:
