Tool bodies are machined on CNC lathes at the SMOXH production facility in Konya, Türkiye, which covers 15,000 square meters.

The Turkish manufacturer produces and heat treats its own tool bodies in Konya, and supplies standard references through SmoxhShop.

Controlling the heat treatment is controlling the tool.”

KONYA, TURKEY, September 16, 2026 / EINPresswire.com / -- In machining difficult alloys, the tool is rarely the largest item on an invoice and is almost always the most variable component of the cost per part. When machining titanium Ti-6Al-4V or Inconel 718, cutting edge life is

measured in minutes, not shifts, and every insert change stops the spindle. SMOXH Cutting Tools , a Konya, Turkey-based manufacturer of indexable insert cutting tools and toolholders, offers more than 7,200 part numbers in its 2026 catalog and supplies them to export markets through SmoxhShop , its online sales channel launched in October 2025.

Where precision machining is concentrated:

The Mexican aerospace sector illustrates this shift. The Querétaro Aerocluster, the largest aerospace conglomerate in Latin America, grew by 10% in 2025 and comprises more than 60 organizations specializing in precision machining, aerostructures, turbine blades, landing gear, and flight control surfaces. Mexico's aerospace exports reached $10.7 billion in 2024. Meanwhile, Querétaro supports an automotive supply chain of 1,003 companies and auto parts production valued at $9.3 billion in 2025.

Brazil contributes the volume. Its manufacturers produced 2.65 million vehicles in 2025, the sector's best result since 2019, with exports of 528,000 units, 32.1% more than the previous year.

These are two distinct demands. One consumes tooling due to material difficulty; the other, due to volume.

Why boring defines the process:

Internal diameter work concentrates the problem. As the ratio between the unsupported overhang and the bar diameter increases, stiffness decreases, and beyond about four diameters, most steel bars begin to vibrate under normal conditions. The operator reduces the feed rate, and the loss is silently distributed throughout the batch.

In finishing operations, the problem is different: dimensional accuracy and surface quality on an inside diameter, often to H7 tolerance and with no room for subsequent correction. Here, the repeatability of the insert seat and the arrival of coolant at the cutting edge are more important than the chip removal rate.

Heat treatment as a prerequisite:

A tool purchased remotely must behave predictably because the shop cannot inspect the supplier's plant.

In December 2024, SMOXH commissioned a controlled atmosphere heat treatment facility at its Konya plant. Heat treatment establishes the hardness and dimensional stability of steel; performing it in a regulated atmosphere limits surface decarburization, which leaves the outer layer of the workpiece softer than the core. In a boring bar, this outer layer is precisely where the insert pocket is machined.

The practical consequence for the distant buyer is that a replacement part performs just like the one it replaces.

"Controlling the heat treatment is controlling the tool. A part that leaves the plant with the same hardness and the same pocket geometry every time is what gives meaning to the rest of the specification," stated Mustafa Şimşek, founder and CEO of SMOXH Cutting Tools.

Mining: Machining that doesn't appear in industrial statistics.

Chile produces about a quarter of the world's copper, and Peru reached 2.7 million tons in 2025, slightly less than 12% of global production; together they account for more than a third of the world's copper.

This activity generates machining that no production statistics record: repair of shafts, pump and valve bodies, boring of hydraulic cylinders, and manufacturing of bushings. With declining ore grades and rising operating costs, machining spare parts in-house is more sensible than importing them.

Two routes to the workshop

: Standard references circulate through SmoxhShop: downloadable dimensional data sheets, a multilingual interface, and direct ordering without a quotation cycle. Special tools follow a different route, with the engineering team designing them around the specific operation. SMOXH manufactures custom tools alongside its standard product range.

The Konya plant occupies 15,000 m² with 120 employees, including engineers, and exports to more than 40 countries. Ongoing investment is focused on machining capacity, robotic handling and automation, expanding production space, and establishing a dedicated R&D function for tool geometry.
