DENMARK: The world's best footballers are under more pressure than ever before

DENMARK, July 17, 2026 / EINPresswire.com / -- In 2026, the sport is characterized by a high level of activity and great physical demands. The risk of injury is very much a fixed part of the elite matches that we will see unfold during the World Cup.

How vulnerable are the world's best players when they gather for the 2026 World Cup?

They are putting themselves at risk to such an extent. The number of injuries in recent

seasons has been increasing, and there is no sign of the trend reversing. The total number of injuries for the 2024/25 season landed at 4,456 in Europe's five biggest leagues.

A combination of factors explains this. An overly packed calendar with limited recovery time for players increases the risk of injuries. The 2026 World Cup is a particularly busy time for them. Extreme seasonal heat is another cause of injuries, as players lose fluids, which increases the risk of muscle fatigue and injuries.

During the 2026 World Cup, the American stadiums in Arlington, Houston and Monterrey are expected to be particularly hot. Traveling between these locations also puts strain on the body, making it susceptible to injury – around 55% of players have said they have had an injury due to limited rest time.

Midfielders are the most exposed on the pitch, accounting for 43.6% of all injuries. In addition to the physical costs to the individual player, the total cost to the industry of lost time on the pitch is more than DKK 5 billion.

Of all injuries, hamstring problems are by far the most common – some of the most recent hamstring problems among top players include:
• Kylian Mbappé
• Mohamed Salah
• Lamine Yamal
• Marc-André ter Stegen
• Reece James
• Alphonso Davies
• Trent Alexander-Arnold

Several leading Danish players have also suffered from them over the past few years:
• Patrick Dorgu
• Rasmus Højlund
• Joachim Andersen
• Jonas Wind

While it is undeniably helpful to reduce match schedules, reduce travel time and place matches in cooler locations, the injury challenge is still not solved.

The World Cup organizers have taken active steps to ease the burden on players. 72 hours of rest between matches is mandatory at this World Cup, along with water breaks included in each half. Whether that will be enough is uncertain. Full physical recovery takes more than 72 hours. And 10 out of 16 match locations are so hot that the risk of muscle fatigue and injury increases.

When players get injured, the performance of the entire team drops, so it's worth keeping an eye on injuries at the 2026 World Cup.
