Nikita Sarnovsky won the Federation Cup - the junior final of the Russian Grand Prix in Kaluga, scoring 238.55 points. Nikolai Kolesnikov won silver - 238.46, Lev Lazarev became the bronze medalist - 234.65 points.
The results of the men's tournament at the Junior Grand Prix Final in Kaluga came as a surprise, including for the participants of the competition. The winner of two
stages of the Grand Prix series Nikita Sarnovsky, who was second after the short program, did not avoid shortcomings in the free program.Evgeni Plushenko's student skated a program with four ultra-si - for the first time at the start of the season he jumped a quadruple loop, a cascade - a quadruple lutz with a double toe loop, a triple axel and a combination with a quadruple toe loop and two double axels.
Nikita's first planned solo quadruple lutz and triple axel in a cascade with a triple toe loop failed. The skater came in fourth in the free program, but won the tournament based on the sum of the two programs, partly rehabilitating himself for the failure at the Russian championship in Saransk.
After the performance, Nikita admitted that at the beginning of the season he said that he was only focused on winning, because all athletes want that. But the season turned out to be uneven, and after the final he will work hard on the cleanliness of the performances, because in any case, this is the most important thing, to improve the second mark and, in general, he will try to surprise next season.
— Mixed feelings, the skate was not "wow", there are shortcomings, "butterfly", a fall. Everything needs to be corrected. The goal at the beginning of the season was to get first place -- 65 percent of it was achieved.
-- You jumped a quadruple ritberger at a competition for the first time this season; before that you tried a quadruple flip.
-- Yes. My hip hurts a lot, it was very painful on the flip, but not so much on the Rittberger.
-- So it was an impromptu performance with the Ritberger?
-- No, I did a Rittberger jump during training.
— What did you feel when you saw the difference with second place of nine hundredths?
— My heart skipped a beat. I’m sitting here, dissatisfied with my performance, I see a difference of nine hundredths with second place, I think: “Wow.”
— What is more important to you – medals or confident, clean performances?
— Clean performances are of great value to me. There will be a little surprise next season.
Nikolai Kolesnikov was nine hundredths of a point short of first place. But Svetlana Sokolovskaya's student did not hide the fact that with such serious competition in the men's final, silver was a surprise for him. Although Kolya had been working hard in training for this start, he achieved a clean triple axel, and quadruple jumps became more consistent.
Nikolai was in third place after the short program, and came in second in the free program, skating it with a triple axel and three quadruples – two salchows, a solo and a cascade, which the judges noted as underrotations, and a clean quadruple toe loop.
In the sum of the two programs, Kolesnikov set a personal season record, earning 238.46 points. It was important for the athlete to be among the prize winners, because not everything worked out at the Russian championship in Saransk, Kolya finished eighth.
— Did you expect to be on the podium?
— I didn’t think I’d make it to the podium. I wasn’t thinking about the place, I was thinking about showing what I’d worked on with the coaches. My emotions are mostly positive, because I was able to show the maximum of what I’d prepared. It’s a bit of a shame that I didn’t push through the free program, I could have skated the short program better. So, I’ll work harder to skate cleaner.
-- What can you take credit for in this tournament? A clean triple axel, what else?
-- I liked how I set myself up. I tried to skate with all my heart. I skated two programs quite well. After the Russian championship, I was upset at first, but then I analyzed everything and worked on my mistakes.
— A small gap from first place. Is it a shame?
— It’s a shame, but it means it needed some work.
The winner of the Russian Championship Lev Lazarev won bronze in the Grand Prix final. Sergei Davydov's student was leading in Kaluga after the short program, but his free skate performance was not successful.
According to the athlete, he was very well prepared for the final, but after a confident quad flip in the free skate, something went wrong. But this is also an experience, albeit a negative one. In any case, in sports you need to learn to overcome difficulties and different life moments.
— I was better prepared for this tournament than any other this season. Today it just didn’t work out, I started well with a quad flip, then something went wrong. I did a salchow, but I couldn’t hold on until the end.
-- Is fatigue at the end of the season taking its toll?
-- I don’t feel tired at the end of the season, I try to rest after competitions so that my strength doesn’t disappear by the end of the season.
German Lenkov , a figure skater from St. Petersburg, took fourth place with a personal best of 232.75 points. The athlete from Alexey Mishin's group in Kaluga skated a free program with a clean triple axel, moving this jump to the beginning of the program, then with a quadruple toe loop and salchow, updating his "sizn best" in the free program - 157.83.
Vadim Voronov came in fifth – 226.65. The athlete from Victoria Butsaeva's group won the free program in the final – 159.58. This is the athlete's personal record at the series stages and the national championship. In Kaluga, Vadim managed to land two quadruple lutzes – a solo one and in a cascade with a double toe loop, jumped two triple axels and did everything else.
Gleb Kovtun closed the top six with 224.04 points. Gleb started his free program with a cascade - quadruple toe loop + triple toe loop and jumped two triple axels. This season, Gleb was a prize winner at one of the Grand Prix stages, qualified for the championship and the series final.
