TOL distributes fiberglass boats to fishermen in Cavite
Senate Majority Leader Francis "TOL" Tolentino distributed motorized fiberglass boats to fishermen in Cavite province, fulfilling a promise made by the senator after a massive oil spill devastated their livelihoods last year.
"They go out to sea every day to bring fish to our dinner tables, but
fishermen are among the poorest sectors that the government should help," Tolentino said during turnover ceremonies held separately in Naic, Tanza, Rosario, and Cavite City.In partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the distribution of motorized fiberglass boats aims to boost the livelihood of the fishing sector in Cavite. The boats are also equipped with transponders to ensure the location and safety of the fishermen while they are at sea.
"Many of you have lost your livelihood due to the massive oil spill from Bataan that spread all the way here," said TOL, referring to the oil leak from the oil tanker MT Terranova, which sank in the waters off Limay, Bataan on July 25, 2024.
"We are back to fulfill our promise to help our fellow fishermen recover," added TOL.
It will be recalled that Tolentino filed Senate Resolution No. 1084, which prompted the Senate to investigate the serious impact of the oil spill on the environment and the livelihood of fishermen.
In August 2024, Tolentino accompanied President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. in delivering financial assistance to thousands of fishermen in Cavite. TOL also conducted its own relief operations to assist disaster victims.
Aside from the boats provided to the four localities, Tolentino also distributed Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) assistance to a fishermen's organization in Talisay town, Batangas, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DWSD).
TOL also has a similar program for fishermen in the town of Balayan in Batangas, which will be launched on Monday, February 10.
