SLOVENIA, September 22 - This year's session is taking place at a time marked by numerous armed conflicts, deepening geopolitical divisions, and mounting pressure on international law and the multilateral system. Discussions are primarily focused on the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, conflict prevention, human rights, and the future and reform of the United Nations.
The General Debate is being held under the theme: "Restoring trust, managing transformation:
A United Nations that delivers for all". A significant proportion of the discussions will also be devoted to the UN80 initiative, which aims to enhance the efficiency, financial sustainability, and coherence of the UN system.Throughout the session, Slovenia will emphasise the importance of effective multilateralism, respect for the UN Charter and international law, as well as the responsibility of international institutions to turn agreed principles into tangible outcomes. Among Slovenia's key priorities include international peace and security, the protection of civilians, respect for international and humanitarian law, conflict prevention, and human rights.
Slovenia also supports efforts to reform the United Nations, making it stronger and more effective, so that it can respond promptly to international crises and deliver tangible results for people.
Before the start of the General Debate, the Prime Minister attended the traditional welcome reception for heads of delegation, which was hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The event provided an opportunity to hold informal discussions with the Secretary-General and other heads of state and government about current international issues.
The Prime Minister will take part in several additional activities and hold a series of meetings during the rest of this high-level week. He will also present the Republic of Slovenia's positions on key international issues to the UN General Assembly.
