Kesti's doctoral dissertation found that organizational personnel have a huge amount of tacit knowledge that has not been systematically utilized to develop competitiveness. The problem has been that it has been too difficult and laborious to exploit this potential.

Kesti’s research and practical development projects have shown that when development is targeted correctly and personnel’s expertise and tacit knowledge are systematically utilised, productivity improvements can exceed all expectations.

This does not require expensive product development projects, but is about improving everyday work: small observations, utilising expertise and developing ways of working. Since everyday work needs are constantly changing – as personnel, processes, services and the environment change – development must be fast and flexible. For example, in Kesti's doctoral thesis, Starkki improved its productivity (HCROI) by over 4%, while simultaneously increasing the number of employees and turnover. As a result of operational research, JYSK achieved a profit improvement of 4,700 euros per employee, Oulun Rosso made a leap of almost 50 places in customer satisfaction, and in the care sector, Treili improved the quality of working life by over 10%, which led to an almost fivefold increase in financial results.
