ITALY: Francesca Lollobrigida signs the Olympic record and triumphs in the 3,000 meters. First gold Buonfiglio

Italy -
The Italia Team drops the trio of medals at the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Games. After the double morning podium signed by Giovanni Franzoni and Dominik Paris in the men's downhill of alpine skiing in Bormio, in fact, the gold (complete with an Olympic record) of a phenomenal Francesca Lollobrigida on the distance of 3,000 meters of speed skating materialized on the ice of the Milano Ice Park tag. This is the first gold for Italy in this five-ring event as well as the first historic female triumph at an Olympics after the successes of Enrico Fabris (1,500 meters) and the men's team pursuit, both of which took place in the last home edition of Turin 2006.

The veteran of the Castelli Romani (photo Ferdinando Mezzelani/CONI), on the day of her 35th birthday and under the gaze of Luciano Buonfiglio (who was able to witness her first Olympic gold medal up close since he was elected President of CONI), became the protagonist of an immense performance on the long track of the Lombard capital. Starting inside the third to last heat together with the Canadian Valerie Maltais, the Italian champion crossed the finish line with a time of 3:54.28, crumbling the previous five-ring record. Nothing to do for both the Norwegian Ragne Wiklund (+2.26) and Maltais herself (+2.65), who had to settle for silver and bronze respectively.

"It's the Olympics of the first times, it's a great emotion and I want to cry. I don't know if we realize what is happening. FISI and FISG are two federations with two presidents, technical, logistical, health and Olympic preparation staff who have left nothing to chance and deserve this success and the applause of all of Italy and the Italian sports world. The protocol of the Institute of Sports Medicine and Science on female athletes on maternity leave is an invitation to all athletes to have many children and it is an invitation to the Italian government to give the right support to our girls to continue to devote themselves to their activity and be successful protagonists", the statements of Luciano Buonfiglio.

For the class of 1991 born in Frascati, this is the third medal in her career at the Winter Games after the two signed four years ago at Beijing 2022 (silver again in the 3,000 meters and bronze in the mass start). The first podium with five rings as a mother-athlete, almost three years after the birth of little Tommaso, a joy that she shared with the other athletes by playing a leading role as testimonial of the 'Maternity Athletes Project' promoted by CONI and the National Athletes' Commission. (AGC)
