The Los Angeles-based Foundation for a Drug-Free World International is led by Executive Director Jessica Hoffman. The non-profit, public benefit organization provides fact-based information about drugs so that anyone can make informed decisions and live a drug-free life. No one likes to be told what they can and can't do, especially a teenager. Therefore, facts are provided to young people to evaluate and make an informed decision about drugs in the first place.
Through a global network of volunteers, 56 million educational brochures have been distributed, tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in 120 countries, and The Truth About Drugs public service announcements have been broadcast on 275 television stations. These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive effects of drugs so they can make the decision not to use them.
Much is said about drugs around the world: on the streets, in schools, on the Internet, and on television. Some of it is true, and some is not. Much of what we hear about drugs actually comes from those who sell them. Reformed drug dealers have confessed that they would say anything to get others to buy drugs. Everyone needs the real facts to avoid getting hooked on drugs and stay away from them.
Sooner or later (if it hasn't happened already), a young person will be offered drugs. The decision to use them or not could drastically affect that life. Any addict will tell you that they never expected a drug to take over their life, that they started out “just doing weed” and that it was “just something to do” with friends. They thought they could handle it, and when they discovered they couldn’t, it was too late. This is why it’s so important to know the facts about drugs, not opinions or hype.
The Truth About Drugs, a comprehensive multimedia program, is based on an enduring truth: The more children and young people know about drugs, the less likely they are to try them. All this knowledge comes at no cost to anyone, school, or institution. The package includes: An educator’s guide containing lesson plans, essays, and assignments for a full semester’s worth of classes designed to encourage student participation (also downloadable online); the award-winning documentary, The Truth About Drugs, which features former drug users who survived the nightmare of addiction; plus 24 sets of The Truth About Drugs booklet series and 12 They Said/Lied posters.
The Drug Truth Education Kit is offered as a tool for educators teaching children 11 years and older in a classroom setting, for anyone providing group instruction, or in a community-based teaching setting.
