ZHUHAI, China, Dec. 14, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Huangmaohai Link, a major new transoceanic passage project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, entered the test phase on December 11. This infrastructure includes six expressways with traffic in both directions limited to 100 km/h. The 31-kilometer crossing connects Pingsha Town in Zhuhai City with Doushan Town in Taishan City,
Jiangmen City. Once the crossing is opened, the journey between the two cities will be reduced to 30 minutes, instead of an hour. This link links to a photo appended to this press release.
For this western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, construction work began in June 2020 and the homologation inspection was successfully completed in November 2024. This infrastructure includes two main bridges: the Gaolan Port Bridge and the Huangmaohai Bridge, the largest three-tower, cable-stayed road bridge in the world. Connecting Hong Kong and Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the passage offers a breathtaking view of the slender towers that rise above the sea and the flocks of gracefully flying egrets. It gives tourists access to Jiangmen landmarks such as old observation towers and the Birds' Paradise Nature Reserve, as well as local seafood restaurants.
The project was overseen by Guangdong Provincial Communication Group and involved 31 organizations and nearly 10,000 workers. According to the Huangmaohai Link Administrative Center, the project has faced significant challenges, such as frequent super typhoons. It was completed in just six years, at a pace that officials dubbed "Huangmaohai speed." Thanks to its remarkable aesthetics, this infrastructure is not only functional. Two main bridges, the Gaolan Port Bridge and the Huangmaohai Bridge, have five cable-stayed towers that rise gracefully above the sea. Beyond aesthetics, the project features seven innovations, including the curve-faced reinforced concrete unipolar tower structure and aerodynamic controls to suppress floating and vortex-induced vibrations in the split-type steel box girders. Dubbed the "greenest transoceanic passage," the project bypasses protected nature reserves and offers views of egrets flying in tandem at the passage, presenting a vision of natural, humanistic, and cultural beauty.
For residents of Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and overseas Chinese, the crossing offers the fastest route to reach Jiangmen via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. Together with other major infrastructure in the Greater Bay Area, such as the Huangpu, Nansha, Humen, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridges and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, this passage forms an extensive network for crossing the sea and rivers in the Greater Bay Area. This ambitious network will accelerate the region's transformation into a world-class hub. It will promote better integration of various industries, technology, culture and tourism between the Greater Bay Area and the western part of Guangdong Province.
